LibGuides- Create New Guide from Scratch

Open LibApps Login in another browser window to work through this tutorial side by side.

First, log in to your LibApps account @ the University of Texas at Austin using your email and password.

Then, select the top left blue LibApps dropdown menu, then select Libguides from the dropdown list.

Next, scroll down to the box called LibGuides Shortcuts and select the first option - Create Guide.

Once you are on the page for creating a new guide, follow these steps:

  • Choose Layout or Reuse: Select "Start Fresh"
  • Guide Name: Write a name for your guide based off of guidelines
  • Guide Description: (not necessary, leave blank)
  • Guide Type: Select Subject, course, or topic 
    • Collection guides will go under the topic type
  • Group Assignment: Select "UT Libraries"
  • Password: (not necessary, leave blank)
  • Share Guide Content: If you are okay your guide content being reused, select "Community"
  • Once you have filled out the above fields, select Create Guide

 You have created your guide, the next steps are:
  • For subject and course guides, designate a subject(s)
  • Add in a friendly URL for your guide

Click on the pencil icons next to URL and Subjects to make these changes.
 Now, let's add some content to your guide page. Start by adding in a profile box:
  • In the far right column, select Add Box Column 2
  • Under the Create a New Box tab, for Type select "Profile"
  • You can leave Box Name blank - it will default to "Librarian" as the box name
  • Click Save
  • If you don't see your box added immediately, Refresh the page (NOTE: if you hit refresh, this will restart Guide on the Side)

If your profile box is looking bare and missing a photo and other info about you, you will need to go back to the main LibApps, then go to My Profile to update this information, so it will show up in your guide's profile box.
 
You only have to update this information once, for it to be the same across all your guides.

Next, you can add in the first main content box for your guide by selecting Add Box - Column 1.
  • Under the Create a New Box tab, for Type select "Standard"
  • For Standard boxes, a box name is required. Name your box according to content/ style guidelines
  • Click Save
  • If you don't see your box added immediately, Refresh the page (NOTE: if you hit refresh, this will restart Guide on the Side)

Add text to the new Standard content box you just created, by selecting Add/ Reorder, then Rich Text/ HTML from the dropdown.
 
  • Add in your text to the WYSIWYG editor and then select Save and Close
  • Refresh the page, if you don't see your changes immediately

Add new pages to help your user navigate the guide, by selecting the + icon under "Home" on the far left.
  • Under the Create a New Page tab, select Regular (default), Discussion or blog as the Page Type
  • Write a name for the page
  • Select Save
  • Once the page is created, you can add content by adding in boxes.

Use the Page and gear option near the top of your guide to:
  • Reorder and move around pages, boxes, and content items
  • Delete pages (options in the far right guide navigation menu) at your discretion

Once you are happy with your guide, use the far right Unpublished red dropdown menu to change your guide status to Published.
